Veszprem to set new Preliminary Round record?

One Veszprem secured spot in EHF Champions League quarter-final by beating Sporting 33:32 at match No. 12 this season. In ten season of competition of 16 best teams, only in the first (2015/2016) Hungarian champions had better score than 22 points of Xavi Pascual squad. It was with Antonio Carlos Ortega and later Xavi Sabate on helm (23 points) in season which ended with spectacular defeat at the Final in Cologne, when Polish Kielce made epic comeback in the last quarter of the match.

Now, Pascual has two more chances to set a new record.

  • 2015/2016 Season: 23 points in Group A; advanced to the final, finishing as runners-up.

  • 2016/2017 Season: 18 points in Group A; reached the quarter-finals.

  • 2017/2018 Season: 18 points in Group B; eliminated in the Last 16 round.

  • 2018/2019 Season: 20 points in Group A; reached the final, finishing as runners-up.

  • 2019/2020 Season: 20 points in Group B; season concluded without a champion due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • 2020/2021 Season: 20 points in Group B; reached the quarter-finals.

  • 2021/2022 Season: 17 points in Group B; finished fourth in the competition.

  • 2022/2023 Season: 18 points in Group A; eliminated in the quarter-finals.

  • 2023/2024 Season: 20 points in Group A; reached the quarter-finals.

  • 2024/2025 Season: As of February 21, 2025, Veszprém has accumulated 22 points in Group A, leading the group and advancing to the quarter-finals.
