SG Flensburg-Handewitt to replace Golla with Bergholt
SG Flensburg-Handewitt has found a successor for their departing captain Johannes Golla. The North Germans have signed Danish World Champion Emil Siersbæk Bergholt, another Danish handball player, as a new addition. Bergholt will join the team in the summer of 2026, signing a three-year contract with SG.
The 27-year-old Danish line player grew up in the handball division of Skjern Håndbold. After winning two cup titles with the West Jutland team, he moved for two seasons to Danish second-division club TM Tønder Håndbold. After two more years and another cup win with Mors-Thy Håndbold, he returned to his youth club Skjern, where his father Henrik also played. The move to Flensburg will be Bergholt’s first international station in his career.
“It is an honor for me to have the chance to play for a club like Flensburg. I am already looking forward to running out at the GP Joule Arena with the incredible atmosphere. SG is a big club, and I am ready to give everything for the club and especially for the fans,” said Emil Siersbæk Bergholt.
Bergholt has already gained experience on the international stage, making his debut for the Danish national team in 2023 against Germany under coach Nikolaj Jacobsen. He was also part of the Danish squad at the World Championship earlier this year, where, together with his future teammates, he celebrated the fourth consecutive World Championship title for Denmark.
“Emil is a line player who has gained international experience both at the club level and with the national team,” said SG Managing Director Holger Glandorf. “We are of course proud that we have succeeded in convincing him with our vision, and that we were able to prevail against national and international competition. Emil brings the experience we will need after Johannes’s departure and still has great potential to develop further.”
His future coach, Aleš Pajović, adds, “With Emil, we are getting a line player in the prime of his career who brings exactly what we want for SG. He is a team player with a big fighting heart. Emil is a player who can help us both offensively and defensively.”
