SG Flensburg-Handewitt sign Marko Kopljar

SG Flensburg-Handewitt has reacted to the injury of Kay Smits by signing Marko Kopljar until the end of the season. The Croatian player will already be in the squad for the EHF European League match against VfL Gummersbach.

“We are very grateful to Marko for being ready to come to Flensburg at such short notice. He will provide relief for Niclas Kirkeløkke in the right back position and, above all, enrich the team with his national and international experience,” said SG Managing Director Holger Glandorf about the new signing.

The Croatian, who previously played for RK Zagreb, Paris Saint-Germain, FC Barcelona, and Telekom Veszprém, was with Füchse Berlin from 2017 to 2024. Throughout his career, Kopljar has gained experience in the Champions League and has won multiple national championships and cup titles. With Füchse Berlin, he won the EHF Cup in 2018 and the EHF European League in 2023.

“I am grateful and proud to have the chance to play handball again in Flensburg. Ljubomir Vranjes’ call was a bit surprising, but I understand the situation here and I want to help. I’m looking forward to playing handball again in Flensburg,” said Marko Kopljar.

Kopljar was also successful with the Croatian national team. He played 147 international matches and scored 305 goals. With the Croatian team, he won bronze medals at the European Championship and the 2012 Olympic Games.

“As the transfer window had already closed in mid-February, it was not easy to sign a new player. Marko has played for the best clubs in the world and knows the Bundesliga from his time in Berlin. He brings experience that will be very valuable to us in our current situation, especially in defense,” said SG coach Aleš Pajović.
