Oscar Bergendahl to miss rest of the season

Just before the resumption of the Daikin HBL, SC Magdeburg has shared disappointing news regarding pivot Oscar Bergendahl’s injury.

The Swedish player, who suffered a serious ankle injury early in the match against VfL Gummersbach in December, will not only be out for several months but is now expected to miss the rest of the season. His injury was a major blow for Magdeburg fans at the Getec Arena, and the club had initially estimated a three-month absence. However, after further evaluation, the decision was made to proceed with surgery.

“Once the swelling in his left ankle reduced, it became clear that an operation was necessary. The surgery went smoothly and successfully,” the club announced, while also confirming: “At this point, a return this season is highly unlikely.”

In the pivot position, coach Bennet Wiegert will have to rely on Magnus Saugstrup and Tim Zechel, with the latter missing out on Germany’s final squad for the Handball World Championship.

SC Magdeburg lost their 2025 opener against THW Kiel 25:31.
