Luka Karabatic Retires from International Handball

Former captain of the French national handball team, Luka Karabatic, has announced his retirement from international play. The 36-year-old PSG pivot, who won Olympic gold (2021), two World Championships (2015, 2017), and two European Championships (2014, 2024), confirmed his decision on social media, expressing gratitude for his time with the national team.

Karabatic, who earned 172 caps and scored 182 goals, leaves after securing bronze at the 2024 World Championship. His departure follows other key players, including his brother Nikola Karabatic, Vincent Gérard, Valentin Porte, and Timothey N’Guessan.

Reflecting on his decision, he admitted his brother’s retirement made him question his own future. “After the World Championship, I knew it was time to step away,” he said. Head coach Guillaume Gille praised Karabatic’s leadership and his unforgettable buzzer-beater against Egypt in the quarterfinals.

With this exit, France continues its generational renewal, turning to a new era under captain Ludovic Fabregas. 🚀
