For the first time ever and in their 50 year anniversary, Mecalia Atlético Guardés has become the new champion of the Spanish Liga Loterías. After a home victory for 28-20 against KH-7 BM Granollers on the last match of the season, the team coached by José Ignacio Prades finished on top of the league leaving behind a 4 year hegemony of Superamara Bera Bera.
On their home court in A Guarda, the Galician club had some problems at the beginning of the match, but managed to reach the half time buzzer with a 15-13 advantage. The second half saw the locals quickly stepping on the gas pedal and slowly broadening the gap. With eight minutes to go the goal difference had stretched to 10 (26-16).
The atmosphrere in the packed court of A Sangriña was quite exciting and when that 26th goal came, the celebrations had already started. For this first title of the club, the team obtained a total of 24 wins and only 2 loses throughout the tournament, one of them in hands of Superamara Bera Bera (finished second) and the other one against Rocasa Gran Canaria Ace, which finished third. Plus, the Galician hold a record of two entire seasons unbeaten on home court.
In other results, Rincón Fertilidad Málaga defeated Helvetia Balonmano Alcobendas for 28-30 and earned a spot for European competitions while relegating the team from Madrid to the second division (División de Honor Plata). Esencia 27 Ule Cleba León Balonmano is the other team relegated.
