The Executive Director of Győri ETO-UNI FKC Kft, Rita Uhlig, talked for Handball-Planet.com about the future of the club:
How are you satisfied with the team’s performance in the current season of the Hungarian Championship, and what is the main goal for the remainder of the season?
– For Győr, competing in the Hungarian First Division (NBI) has brought a performance beyond expectations. Every player has given and continues to give their best. We are also successful in the Hungarian Cup, currently ranked among the top eight. The team is currently in fifth place in the standings. The rest of the season is full of objectives, including the tactical development of the team, individual and group progress for the players, as well as decisions that will ensure the long-term competitiveness of the squad. Our main goal is to maintain our position in the league and reach the semifinals in the Hungarian Cup.
Győr is famous for women’s handball powerhouse in the recent decades. How much support is there for the men’s team among the local people, and is it possible for the city to have two strong handball teams at the European level?
– Győr has a rich history and success in men’s handball. Throughout our history, we’ve won the IHF and KEK cups and many of our talents have competed internationally. The IHF Cup-winning team (1986) made up of Hungarian players is well-known to everyone. We have great traditions, which the current team is reviving and striving to honor our roots. The people of Győr have been eagerly awaiting the return of the men’s handball team to the NBI. In Győr, not only women’s and men’s handball teams compete in the NBI, but also basketball and football. It’s a strong city with strong supporters. The majority owner of the men’s handball team is Széchenyi University.
Do you have long-term plans, and how do you see Győr in a few years?
– Győr and its surrounding area is an economically prosperous city with a dynamically developing industry. Our medium to long-term plans include participating in the EHF Cup, stabilizing the development of the club’s youth system, and increasing the club’s international recognition. Dean Bombac is responsible for this.
Veszprém and Szeged are the two strongest teams in Hungarian handball. Is it possible for your project to come close to their level?
– Our goal is definitely to secure a position in the 3rd or 4th place behind them – concluded Rita Uhlig.
