Cruciate ligament rupture – Season over for Simic

The worst fears have been confirmed: Nebojsa Simic has suffered a torn cruciate ligament. The season is therefore over for the MT Melsungen goalkeeper.

MT Melsungen’s unbelievable run of injury misfortune continues as the North Hessian handball Bundesliga team must now cope with another shock absence. Fan-favorite goalkeeper Nebojsa Simic has torn the cruciate ligament in his left knee, along with damage to the meniscus, as revealed by an MRI scan on Tuesday.

The injury occurred during Saturday’s Bundesliga match against VfL Gummersbach, when Simic twisted his knee awkwardly in the 50th minute. The 32-year-old Montenegrin will miss the remainder of the year at least.

Misfortune rarely comes alone this season for MT. Alongside Simic, Dainis Kristopans and Nikolaj Enderleit are also sidelined temporarily. Kristopans is suffering from Achilles tendon inflammation requiring rest, although the Latvian might return for the quarter-final second leg against Bidasoa Irun next Tuesday.

Nikolaj Enderleit, Kristopans’ teammate in the right-back position, is struggling with knee problems, with hopes that the Dane will be back for Saturday’s away match in Erlangen. For the first leg against Irun on Tuesday evening, Jonas Riecke joins the squad. The usual goalkeeper duo becomes a trio, with Adam Morawski starting in goal, while Pawel Krawczyk and Carsten Lichtlein are on the bench.
