Marko Mitev’s Season Ends After Serious Knee Injury – Macedonia’s Key Playmaker Sidelined

The leader of the new wave of Macedonian handball, Marko Mitev, suffered a serious knee injury during the match against Slovenia (23:33), bringing his season to an early end.
The 22-year-old playmaker from Skopje’s Alkaloid tore his ligaments, which marks the beginning of a long recovery period, meaning he will be unavailable for both the national team and his club in the upcoming battle for trophies in Macedonia.
Mitev has been a true revelation for the Macedonian national team. The diminutive playmaker has shown significant progress over the past two seasons under the guidance of Kiril Lazarov, and his performances at the 2025 World Championship have drawn the attention of several European clubs.
North Macedonia currently has two points after four rounds in the EHF EURO 2026 qualifiers, but in the final two matches, the team has a realistic chance of securing a spot in the next major tournament if they defeat Estonia and Lithuania.
